Sega Superstar Classis: Zombie Revenge

**Hey guys here is a new series I have for you where I take a wee trip down memory lane looking at some of the good the bad and just the freaking horrible games for different Sega systems**

Zombie Revenge

Sega Dreamcast

The Sega Dreamcast really was ahead of its time! The console just blew away the Sony Playstation and Nintendo 64 when it was released. While many people think back on the more “popular” games such as your Sonic Adventures, Shenmue and Soul Calibur. When I think of Sega Dreamcast the first game that pops into my head everytime is Zombie Revenge.

Zombie Revenge - zr1

Zombie Revenge is something of a spin off to Sega’s House Of The Dead series. It shares more than a few things with those games. Zombie Revenge was actually also released on the Playstation 2, but sadly only in Japan. If you have a Dreamcast then this is a game you simply must track down.

Zombie Revenge may be a little rough on the eyes these days, but back in 2000 when the game was first released it looked really good. The designs of the monsters are really cool and pretty damn grotesque as well. The cut scenes feature characters whose mouths do not move, limbs that seem to disconnect from their bodies……. But as horrible as it sounds it just all adds up to the campy charm of the game.

Zombie Revenge - zr2

The story of Zombie Revenge is about these three characters, a pretty straight talking, no BS type of cop, a sexy chick and a bad ass black guy who looks like he is some kind of relative to Huggy Bear from Starsky & Hutch. These bad ass mothers need to stop an evil dude called Zed from destroying the world with his monsters and zombies!!!! The story is weird, badly written and the voice acting is just god awful……. But I love it! It is just so cheesy and over the top that you cannot help, but smile at it.

Game Play

It was the game play that really made me fall in love with Zombie Revenge. You see  in this era the days of the beat em up were pretty much gone. Games like Streets Of Rage, Final Fight and Double Dragon were not seen as “cool” or “relevant” any more, but Zombie Revenge shows how to bring that style of game into the modern era (well if we go back in a time machine and count 2000 as a modern era) This is just so much fun to play. You walk from area to area kicking all kinds of zombie ass until the game lets you move onto the next one.

You can do a little bit of hand to hand combat in the game which is a lot of fun, but you will really want to keep your eye open for some kind of gun. These guns do run out of ammo, but thankfully new guns and ammo is easily found. Zombie Revenge also has some pretty awesome boss fights with some very creative and creepy bosses for you to kill! The best way to experience Zombie Revenge is with a buddy next to you in co-op! It is not a very long game, but it is one of those games that is fun to play through every now and again. The game play I will admit has aged a little, but there is still a good time to be had here.

Final Thoughts

I played through, Zombie Revenge again a  little while ago and while it is still a fun game and something I would highly recommend to someone. It has aged a little bit. Still, Zombie Revenge remains one of my all-time favorite Dreamcast games!
