Castle Of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse
Sega Mega Drive
While many will agree that it was Sonic The Hedgehog that really boosted the sales of the Sega Mega Drive. The fact is the system still sold fairly well before the famous blue hedgehog came on the scene. Sega still had a number of other great games to showcase how much more powerful their 16-bit Mega Drive was over the NES. One of the best early games on the system was, Castle Of Illusion. This was THE platform game for the Sega Mega Drive before, Sonic was released.
Disney games were something that was held in very high regard back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The Sega Mega Drive would have a number of high quality Disney titles such as Aladdin, Lion King, Quackshot and Gargoyles to name a few.
The graphics of Castle Of Illusion are just incredible. Back in 1991 this was one of the finest looking games that you could get for the Sega Mega Drive. Each of the different worlds in the game had their own look and design to them. There was just a ton of detail in each stage with some amazing attention to detail being done on the background. The character animation also was pretty spectacular with Mickey looking like he was an animated character from an actual Disney movie.
Castle Of Illusion is not going to win any awards for its story, but you have to give Sega credit as there is at least a story here to play through. The game starts with a fun little cinematic showing you how, Minnie Mouse was kidnapped and now it is up to Mickey to go to the evil witches castle and get Minnie back! Castle Of Illusion’s soundtrack could not fit the game anymore perfectly each stage has a fun little song that is memorable and very easy on the ears.
As good as the game looks I think that it plays even better! First thing I want to touch on is “Practice Mode” this was a great idea and was aimed at young kids. The idea of this mode was that you would play through a simplified and shortened version of the game to get you used to the way the game played. Anyway this is a side scrolling platform game, Mickey has two forms of attack. First of all is his butt bumping that he can do. You simply do this by jumping on an enemy’s head, butt bumping if done right can also give you a jump boost. Mickey can also pick up projectiles to throw at enemies as well.
Mickey is just a joy to control and I would say that most of the time you die in the game is because you made a mistake and not because of anything to do with the game. The game has a good selection of worlds for you to play through with each one having its own stages and boss. There is a good challenge here and while you can beat the game fairly quickly it is a game that never gets old. Once you have played the game enough times it is possible to beat it without ever taking a hit!
Mickey Mouse Castle Of Illusion is one of the finest platform games on the Sega Mega Drive. In playing the game again recently I still think that it looks, plays and sounds incredible. It is however way easier than I remember it being. Still this is a fun game that is well worth playing through at least once.
