For today’s top five I am sharing with you my top five female video game characters. These are characters who really connected with me (despite me being a dude) and are the ones that I think are just in general, pretty damn awesome!. Let me just say that I would have loved to put Samus on my list, but now when I think of Samus, Metroid Other M is the first thing that comes to my mind! I want to give an honorable mention to Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite who came real close to making the list. I would love to read who you guys view as the top five female video game characters in the comments section below
Man it was tough to pick between Jill and Claire, but in the end I went for Claire….. just! Claire Redfield was such an amazing character and her journey to find her brother in Resident Evil 2 was the birth of one of the best characters in the Resident Evil franchise. Claire was hard as nails, but she also came across as a pretty nice character as well. It was the game, Resident Evil Code Veronica that really made me a big fan of Claire Redfield while you played as other characters. To me that game is mainly her story and it is one of the best games in the whole franchise.
This was the first time that I had personally encountered a NPC who would accompany on an adventure that I would really care about and not be annoying most of the time. Half Life 2 as an incredible game and while you actually play as Gordon Freeman the whole time for the most part it is, Alyx Vance who really sells you on the story. Your connection with her just gets deeper and deeper as the game progresses and when (no spoilers here) what happens, happens at the end of Half Life 2: Episode 2, you really do feel for her and want to know what happens next…. Which hopefully one day we will.
What is there not to love about Kitana from Mortal Kombat? She is hot, a princess and she can kick some serious ass! Kitana is my favorite female character from any fighting game and she is pretty close to being one of my favorite characters in the Mortal Kombat franchise. I think a huge part of her appeal is that she has a very interesting back story of being a princess who was basically forced to serve and accept the evil Shao Khan as her father. Her joining up with the forces of Earth and becoming a real hero is just so cool and makes her well worth a spot on my list.
The Last Of Us
As a father I and I am sure other gamers with kids felt a real connection with Ellie from The Last Of Us. This character was so well written and acted that it was impossible not to connect with her and really want to make sure that she was safe and that you really would give up your life to save her. Ellie was such a great character that when she was mad, sad, confused or in danger that it really did make you sweat and worry about what to do and what was going to happen. Ellie is easily my favorite NPC character that I have gone on an adventure with.
Lara Croft (Reboot)
Lara Croft will probably be one character who is on most people’s lists of best female video game characters. Specifically the Lara I really liked was the one from the reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise on Xbox 360, PC and Playstation 3 as well as Xbox One and Playstation 4 later. She was just such a great character and we got to experience her going from a somewhat naive person looking for adventure to a really badass woman who not only found adventure, but realized that she has what it takes to survive any situation. The reinvention of Lara Croft was so well done that I would actually have a pretty hard time going back and playing some of the older Tomb Raider games.
