I have spent the better part of the last two weeks with Splatoon and while when I first saw previews for this game earlier in the year I thought “meh that looks kind of fun” I have found myself absolutely hooked on Nintendo’s take on the 3rd person shooter and while it is pretty remarkable that Nintendo have actually made a new IP in the first place. The fact they have knocked it out of the park and come up with characters and a game that is so amazing is awesome shows me that Nintendo can still come up with new and exciting stuff after all these years. I honestly think that over the next few console generations (not that I am wishing my life away or anything) Splatoon is going to be a major franchise for Nintendo.
Today I want to share my thoughts on the game and what I would like to see from Splatoon in the future.
I kind of went into the single player campaign blind. I knew this was in there, but I never really read up on it or paid much attention to it, but man did Nintendo do an amazing job here. So far the reviews, thoughts and videos that I have seen about Splatoon have not gave the single player campaign the credit it deserves.
It took me just over six hours to beat the story and it was six ours well spent. The game has these awesome enemies called Octarians who have kidnaped Zapfish who is essential to Inkopolis’s power. You need to put these punks in their place and save the day. Each level has a scroll for you to find which will help explain a little bit more about this crazy world! The story is charming and while not the most cinematic story I have ever played through I will say that I was hooked from the start. There is no mistaking that this is a Nintendo game you are playing when you go through the story. It just has that classic, Nintendo feel to it. Oh and let me also tell you that the bosses and the battles you have with them are amazing!
Most people will but Splatoon for the multiplayer, but I really want to make it clear that the single player is a lot of fun…. So much fun that I honestly cannot wait to play another story set in Inkopolis.
This of course is the big selling point for Splatoon the multiplayer. Turf War is the games main mode and you will be on a team with three other people and your gal is to cover as much of the map as you can with the ink color your team is. You have many different weapons to use in order to shoot your opponents, but how many times you shoot them really does not matter as it is all about covering the map with ink. Parts of the map that are covered in your ink will allow you to turn into a fast moving squid who can climb walls and get out of a tricky situation if things are heading south!
I cannot stress how much fun playing Turf War is! I have put hours and hours into this already and have enjoyed myself immensely. Nintendo have hit an absolute home run with this game! There is no voice chat, but to be honest it never effected my enjoyment of the game. When playing with a buddy online we did talk via Skype, but I would not say it made the game a million times better. There is an off line multiplayer mode where you have to shoot down more balloons than your opponent, but this mode to be honest is the weakest thing in the game.
What Next For Splatoon?
It is crazy to be talking about the next Splatoon game already I know, but that is just how much fun and amazing this game is. Nintendo are clearly going to support the game with some DLC in the coming year. Plus the Amiibo “missions” add replay value as well, but Nintendo really have laid the ground work for a great series of games. It’s charming characters and villains are something I am looking forward to encountering again. One thing that I can see happening to Splatoon is for Ink Boy/Girl to show up in games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros in the future. I also think that if there was a way for Nintendo to add in support for other Amiibos that would be awesome. Like giving your characters different Nintendo costumes or having to paint a Nintendo character or something Nintendo related.
Splatoon is going to be a huge hit….. well huge hit by Wii U standards and on a console that has some truly amazing games, Splatoon is one that certainly stands out. The Wii U already has plenty of reasons to own the console, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Brow, Wind Waker, Hyrule Warriors, Donkey Kong to name a few…….. and now we can add, Splatoon to that list as well.
