Fortnite has taken the gaming industry by storm. Millions of people play the game daily and purchase thousands of V-bucks. Therefore, it is really no surprise to hear that EpicGames has tons of money to invest in eSports. Yep, that’s right. eSports. My last Fortnite article spoke about a game mode called the Solo Showdown limited time mode. As its name suggests, this was a limited time solo battle royale mode. It was aimed towards serious Fortnite players in an attempt to reward the top 100 players with a hefty V-bucks prize. Why am I bringing that up now? This game mode was Epic Games dipping their toes in the competitive game pool.
Only a week after the game mode’s initial (but brief) induction, Epic Games has announced massive news. They are going to be investing $100,000 into the 2018-2019 season’s competitive Fortnite eSports tournament pool. A quote directly from Epic Game’s site says, “We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different – we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game” (2018). What this means is still unclear this early on. What we can say for sure is that Epic Games wants to be as welcoming as they can be to both the player and the viewer alike. Epic Games urges fans to stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
The announcements don’t stop there. Epic Games announced that they will be at E3 this June. Not only will they have a booth which they encourage fans to visit, they will be running the first ever live Fortnite 100 player Pro-Am. It will feature fifty celebrity and pro player duos that will face off. According to the announcement on the Epic Games site, each duo is competing for “$3,000,000 in charity prize money that they will donate to their charity of choice. The winning duo will receive $1,000,000 in charity to split!” (2018). That is a whole lot of money!
The event will take place on June 12th at 3:30pm PST. Tickets are going to be sold to 3,000 lucky fans at only $10 a piece. Fans in attendance will receive special swag bags as well as free snacks from Durrr Burger. If you’re not in L.A. fear not, this will be live streamed.
Who Will Be Playing?
Fortnite pro and celebrity duos announced so far are:
- Ninja and Marshmello
- Myth and Paul George
- Pokimane and Desiigner
- Markiplier and Joel McHale
- Gotaga and Demetrius Johnson
Epic Games has said that more names will be announced soon.
If you’re not a Fortnite pro and you’re simply playing at home on your PC, mobile device, or console there is still fun to be had. On May 22nd, 2018 the week four challenges were released for people who purchased the battle pass. With these new challenges came the V4.2 content update. The first thing added to the game is the rumored jetpack. Finally, it is here! The jetpack allows the player to fly into the air for short bursts of time. The jetpack can run out of fuel and it has a cooldown, making it easily avoid being an overkill. It is the first in the backpack weapon line. According to Epic Games, the new weapon category:
- Takes up a weapon slot
- Replaces Player’s Cosmetic Bookbag accessory in game only
- Will automatically disappear when it runs out of fuel
New Game Mode:
A new limited time mode has been released. It is a squad specific mode called Solid Gold v2. It is a game mode in which every weapon is a rare one. No average grey, green or blue weapons to be found. The game mode includes:
- A higher chance of Hand Canon and Suppressed Pistol floor drops.
- An increased chance of finding Miniguns, Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles in chests.
- A higher chance of finding Rocket Launchers and Grenade Launchers in supply drops.
- A medium chance of finding Sniper Rifles in supply drops.
- A smaller chance of Assault Rifle and Sniper Rifle floor drops.
- A smaller chance of finding Grenade Launchers, Rocket Launchers and Heavy Shotguns in chests.
- A zero chance of finding a Pistol in a chest or supply drop.
- A smaller chance of finding a Heavy Shotgun and Assault Rifle in a supply drop
In terms of resources, there is an increased number of both pickups and resource farming. There is also an increased rate of drop for all types of shields, campfires and launch pads. Consequently, there is a lower drop rate of bandages, traps, and grenades.
