Call of Duty is one of gaming’s most beloved (and hated) series of all time. Over the years it has become a famed franchise known most for its multiplayer modes. Whether you’re a fan of the series or not, one cannot deny the influence it has had on the shooter genre.
Just a few weeks before E3’s big event, Treyarch has announced the production of the newest game in the franchise: Call of Duty Black Ops 4. This announcement shocked and excited some gamers. Many people knew of the games inevitable release, simply because new games in the franchise come annually. However, what surprised some fans was the announcement of Blackout, Treyarch’s version of the now ever popular battle royale mode.
Blackout contains the biggest map that Treyarch has ever worked on. It is a combination of many pre-existing maps familiar to fans. Players will be able to use weapons from past games, an example being the beloved RC. Players will also be able to use a variety of vehicles, even ones used in the air and at sea. Perhaps most exciting for fans of the game’s lore is the fact that players will be able to pilot popular characters from the series such as Reznov, Mason, and Hudson.
Call of Duty has always had a game mode with battle royale mechanics: free for all. Though, Blackout is more likely to mirror Fortnite and Player Unknown Battleground’s play style. Call of Duty hasn’t seen game modes that cater to a hundred people as many battle royale games usually do. Therefore, it is understandable that Treyarch has not confirmed how many players Blackout will support.
This time around Treyarch has ditched a single player story mode in favor of perfecting their multiplayer game modes. Instead, players will be receiving special solo missions set between the time of Black Ops 2 and 3. These missions focus on the Specialist characters. Similar to games like Overwatch, the Specialist characters will each have their own gear sets and abilities. Players will have to be conscious of how their character can contribute to their team.
The other game mode that fans have been clamoring for is the infamous Zombies mode. This year the mode will be celebrating its tenth anniversary and Treyarch is giving us quite a unique experience. There will be three maps for players to enjoy. The IX which is an Ancient Roman Coliseum, Voyage of Despair which is home of the sinking Titanic ship and Blood of the Dead which is a remake of old zombie maps. Blood of the Dead will feature the original Zombies cast.
Treyarch is adding several game modes within Zombies as well as tons of customizable options. Some examples are adding buffs to players and zombies, timed challenges, and computer-controlled bots. Never before has the Zombies game mode seen computer players for single player Zombies games.
Activision will be showing off Black Ops 4 at E3 this year, but it is unclear what exactly they will be talking about. Though looking at events in the past, it is likely that they will expand upon the multiplayer game mode. The game is set to release on October 12th of this year.
Call of Duty has big shoes to fill. Games like Fortnite and Player Unknown Battlegrounds are overtaking the industry. If Call of Duty still wants to be a force to be reckoned with in the shooter genre, Treyarch is going to have to execute the unique changes they’re bringing to the table perfectly.
